Star Trek: The Original Series
Season 1
Season 1

Synopsis:
The Federation Starship USS Enterprise, captained by James T. Kirk, is on a five year mission of space exploration.
Main Characters:
- Captain James T. Kirk: The captain of the Enterprise, Kirk is charismatic, quick thinking, confident and an excellent leader.
- Mr. Spock: First Officer and Science Officer of the Enterprise, the Half-Vulcan Spock lives a life of emotionless logic and rational thinking.
- Dr. Leonard McCoy: Chief Medical Officer of the Enterprise, McCoy is a bright medical mind, though his hot-headedness and passionate outbursts often put him at odds with Mr. Spock.
Cons:
- Visuals: Even with the recently cleaned up Remastered version of The Original Series, it can be difficult, even for the biggest of fans, to suspend disbelief with such dated and low budget effects and costumes. Even long remembered characters like The Gorn from “Arena” have not aged well.
- The Corbomite Maneuver: The only really disappointing episode of the bunch, and only because of the cringe-worthy ending.
Pros:
- Foundation: Star Trek finds itself is a show very early on, unlike most of the other television shows under the Star Trek brand. Most characterizations, recognizable costumes, props and concepts are ironed out early on.
- Quality: Excepting the one Con, every other episode is either decent or excellent. Strong dialogue and good chemistry between Kirk, Spock and McCoy often carry the day.
- Guest Characters: Arguably the strongest season for guest characters in the Original Series. Many of these characters make the episodes they are involved in better, while some are so good that they should have been recurring characters. Some eventually would return in movies and episodes of other series, such as Khan Noonien Singh and Kor the Klingon Commander, attesting to the strength of many of these characters.
Top 10 Episode Selection

Balance of Terror:
The USS Enterprise engages in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with a Romulan Warbird.

The Menagerie (Part I and II):

Shore Leave:
The weary crew of the USS Enterprise discover a beautiful planet that brings their thoughts to life.
The Squire of Gothos:
The USS Enterprise is waylaid by Trelane, an omnipotent being with an interest in ancient Earth warfare.
The Alternative Factor:
While investigating a disturbance that caused the entire universe to momentarily blink out of existence, the USS Enterprise meets a mad scientist who claims he is being stalked by a monster.

Errand of Mercy:
Kirk and Spock attempt to convince the pacifistic Organians to join the Federation before the ruthless Klingons can conquer them.
The City on the Edge of Forever:
A temporarily insane Dr McCoy is thrown backwards in time, where his actions alter history and erase the Federation from existence.
Review:
There is a reason Star Trek has lasted so long as a franchise, and the solid foundation and exceptional content this first season provides is one of them. Those with pre-conceived notions of the original Star Trek being campy and simplistic are bound to be surprised at how smart the show was even back then. As with older shows, it can be difficult to get past the dated look, but the first season of Star Trek definitely should not be judged by its cover.
