Review:
Star Wars: Tales From The New Republic, edited by Peter Schweighofer and Craig Carey and authored by many, collects together 10 short stories and a novella written by two of the more popular names in Star Wars Expanded Universe fiction, Zahn and Stackpole. Much like “Tales From the Empire”, some of the stories in this collection are not actually from the time of the New Republic nor heavily involve New Republic officials. Some of the stories actually seem like they would be more fitting if they were in Tales From The Empire instead. Semantics aside, the novella again involves a combination of a Thrawn and X-Wing series characters meeting up for an intricate adventure, something that fans of either series can enjoy. The remaining short stories involve a number of Expanded Universe characters in short adventures, some of which also appeared in Tales From The Empire. These are quality Star Wars adventures, with the best involving Boba Fett engaging an Imperial Garrison while hunting for a bounty. While the genres of these stories are not as extremely varied as past collections, a significant amount of Jedi participation helps prop up interest. Overall, Tales From The New Republic provides more Jedi action, more Expanded Universe-specific content, and more stories that involve the name of the collection than in Empire, making it an improvement over its predecessor.
